Did you know?
When you walk from Rootsi Street to Tallinna Street, right in front of you stands a stone building with fine dolomite detailing typical of Saaremaa. Its historical value is far greater than its modest architecture suggests. Completed in 1862, the building was bought in 1911 by the Kuressaare Estonian Society and became a centre of Estonian culture and identity in what was then a German-minded, German-speaking town. Choirs and drama groups met here, various education courses were held, and in 1923 a cinema opened. By 1935 the society’s drama group had grown into the professional Kuressaare Theatre, which made its home here until it was closed down in 1951. Until 1967 the building housed the district house of culture, which also took in the Saaremaa Folk Theatre founded in 1963. After a thorough reconstruction, the building became the home of Kuressaare Town Theatre in 1999 and still is today.
