What to do in Kuressaare
Welcome to Kuressaare!
Kuressaare is the only town on Saaremaa, the centre of Saaremaa municipality and the administrative centre of Saare County. It lies on the south coast of the island and is the westernmost town in Estonia.
Kuressaare grew up around a thousand years ago from a trading post of the ancient islanders at the mouth of the Põduste river, and later developed around the bishop’s castle built in the 14th century, which still stands today. The castle on the seaward edge of town is Kuressaare’s oldest building and was once the stronghold of the bishops of Ösel-Wiek.
There is plenty to do. In our tips we link to the best picks collected by Visit Saaremaa.
